AUGUSTA, Ga.-- The Augusta State men’s and women’s tennis teams both fell decisively to the Armstrong Atlantic Pirates on Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Jaguars’ spring season home opener at Newman Tennis Center in Augusta, Ga.

Armstrong’s men won the dual match 7-2 over the Jags (2-1), and the women swept ASU (1-1), 9-0.

For the men, Victor Meza picked up a win over the Pirates' David Secker in the singles second position (6-4, 3-6 [10-4]), and the team of Lindy Blount and Arthur Figueiro defeated Kevin Sijmons and Taauo Roos in the doubles third position (8-4).

In the women’s contest, the Lady Pirates claimed all nine matches, with Lusia Cowper taking a 6-0, 6-2 win over Nathalia Rodrigues in the singles top seed, and the team of Cowper and Luliia Stupak winning the doubles top seed 8-1 over Rodrigues and Norma Rovira.

After the match with Armstrong, the men went back on the court to take on Morehouse College. The Jaguars defeated Morehouse in the dual match, 8-1.

The only victory for Morehouse came in the singles top seed, where Rafael Smith defeated Victor Meza, 6-2, 6-3. The top prize in the doubles competition went to Meza and Harry Hahn of ASU, who defeated Smith and Anthony Parr, 8-3.

Both the men’s and women’s tennis teams will be back on the court on Tuesday, Feb. 7, when they take on Newberry College at home. The match begins at 2:00 p.m. at Newman Tennis Center.
