ASU Earns NCAA Bid
Jaguars regional bound for fifth time in last nine years

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State’s men’s tennis team earned an at-large bid to the NCAA postseason late Wednesday, according to an announcement from the NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis, Ind.

The Jaguars were one of six Peach Belt Conference men’s tennis teams to be selected among the 60 squads competing for the 2008 National Championship.

Armstrong Atlantic State and Lander will be two of the 16 regional hosts for the first and second rounds of the tournament. GCSU and Columbus State will play at Armstrong Atlantic State, while ASU and Francis Marion will travel to Lander.

Armstrong enters the NCAA Tournament as the No. 1-ranked team in the nation with a perfect 25-0 record. The Pirates will be looking for their first-ever men’s tennis national championship and will begin that quest by taking on CIAA automatic bid winner Shaw in their first match in Savannah. Columbus State and GCSU will play in the other match.

Lander is looking to return to its dynasty days that saw the Bearcats win eight straight national championships from 1993-2000. The Bearcats, 17-6 on the season, will begin their journey by meeting Augusta State in the first round. Francis Marion will take Anderson, which won the automatic bid from Conference Carolinas.

The ASU men’s squad has posted a 15-9 mark overall and entered the postseason ranked No. 31 in the nation. The Jags are led by sophomore Sergi Mullor, who is ranked No. 13 in the nation in singles.

The first and second rounds will take place at on-campus sites May 8-10. The winners at each of the 16 regionals will meet in Houston, Texas, for the national finals May 14-17 at Memorial Park. Times and specific dates for first-round matches will be announced in the coming days.
