Lady Jags Land NCAA Bid
ASU women's tennis squad bound for Mid-Atlantic Regional

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Augusta State women’s tennis team earned an at-large bid to the NCAA postseason late Wednesday, according to an announcement from the NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis, Ind.

The Lady Jaguars were one of six Peach Belt Conference women’s tennis teams to be selected among the 62 squads competing for the 2008 National Championship.

Arm­strong Atlantic State and Francis Marion will be two of the 16 regional hosts for the first and second rounds of the tourna­ment. Augusta State and Clayton State will both play at Armstrong Atlantic State while Columbus State and GCSU will be at Francis Marion.

Armstrong Atlantic State enters the NCAA Tournament as the No. 2-ranked team in the nation with a 26-1 record. The Lady Pirates will be looking for their first national championship since 2005 by taking on CIAA automatic bid win­ner Virginia State in their first match in Savannah. Clayton State and Augusta State will play in the other match.

Francis Marion will host an NCAA women’s tennis regional for the first time in school history after finishing the regular season 20-2. The Patriots will open play on their home courts against Erskine, who won the automatic bid of Conference Carolinas. GCSU and Columbus State will meet in the other match.

The ASU women’s squad has posted a 17-7 mark overall and entered the postseason ranked No. 26 in the nation. The Lady Jags are led by junior Nathalia Rodrigues, who enters the regional with a 15-8 overall record.

The first and second rounds will take place at on-campus sites May 8-10. The winners at each of the 16 re­gionals will meet in Houston, Texas, for the national finals May 14-17 at Memorial Park. Times and specific dates for first-round matches will be announced in the coming days.
