Seniors Benenhaley, Dumas combine on three-hitter

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Augusta State split a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader with Columbus State Saturday afternoon at Jaguar Field.

The Cougars (10-7, 5-1 PBC) picked up a 4-0 win over ASU starter Amy Dumas in game one. CSU tagged Dumas for eight hits, including a leadoff homer from Cassie Cooper in the top of the first.

Brittany Leverett went 3-for-4 with a run scored and Cooper scored a pair of runs for the visitors.

CSU standout Rachel Darr (5-2) went the distance, striking out five. She didn’t allow a hit until the fifth inning and only three Jaguars reached base.

Dumas (4-3) fanned 13, walked four and was charged with eight hits and three earned runs.

ASU (12-6, 2-4 PBC) salvaged a split in game two, bouncing back for a 2-0 victory. Senior righthander Jacklyn Benenhaley (4-1) turned in a strong effort, allowing just three hits with a pair of strikeouts in the first 6.2 innings. Dumas entered with two outs in the top of the seventh, inducing a groundout to record her sixth save of the season.

Angii Verbeelen and Dumas each went 2-for-3 and Leann Barber smacked an RBI-double.

Ashley Chastain (4-3) suffered the loss for CSU. She gave up six hits and two earned runs in two-plus innings before giving way to reliever Jennifer Isasi. She worked the last four innings, yielding just two hits with a walk.

ASU hosts Lenoir-Rhyne in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, March 4 at 1:00 p.m. while CSU travels to UNC Pembroke for a pair of league matchups on Wednesday, March 5.
