ASU falls 4-0 and 1-0 to close out conference play

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The Georgia College & State University softball team (35-11, 12-6 PBC) celebrated senior day by sweeping Augusta State University (25-17, 6-12 PBC) Saturday afternoon at the Peeler Complex.

In game one, winning pitcher Mandy Chandler delivered a one-hit shutout with seven strikeouts for a complete game effort. ASU starting pitcher, Jacklyn Benenhaley tossed five innings giving up seven hits, fanning three and taking the 4-0 loss.

Kimberly Kennedy relieved Banenhaley in the sixth.

Rightfielder Anna Cheely went 1-for-2 with Lady Jaguars' only hit in the first game. The Lady Bobcats' out hit ASU 7-1.

Leadoff hitter Sherquita Bostick was strong at the plate going 2-for-2, batting in one run and scoring two runs, including her solo homerun. Third baseman Tonya Medders was 2-for-3 with two RBI and first baseman Kori Pickowitz was also 2-for-3. Shortstop Kayla Smith put up an RBI and went 1-for-3 from the plate while hitting one over the leftfield fence. Senior Ashley Payne went in as a pitch runner for Pickowitz and scored one of GCSU's four runs.

During game two, Chandler threw a perfect game until the top of the seventh. She gave up one hit while sitting down seven batters for another shutout and complete game effort while improving to 20-6 for the season. ASU starting pitcher Jennifer Miller played three innings giving up two hits, no runs and striking out two. Amy Dumas also tossed three innings for the Lady Jaguars. She gave up four hits, whiffed three and took the loss by giving up the only run of the game.

Second baseman Leann Barber spoiled Chandler's perfect game going 1-for-3 with ASU/s one hit. Bostick and senior Brianna Hope both went 1-for-2 at the plate in the second game. Second baseman Lindsey Swanson and senior Shelbie Lindsey also echoed each others stats going 1-for-3. Smith was strong in game two, going 2-for-2 and batting one run. Designated hitter Chelsea Wilson reached on a walk and scored off of a Smith hit.

Augusta State returns to action to conclude regular season play on Tuesday April 15 at home for senior day against Queens. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
