AUGUSTA,
Ga. - The Augusta State women’s basketball team earned an at-large bid to the NCAA South Atlantic Regional, according to an announcement late Sunday night from the NCAA national headquarters in Indianapolis, Ind.
The Lady Jaguars (19-9), who won a share of the Peach Belt Conference regular-season championship, learned of their postseason fate during a selection show gathering at the Jaguar Student Activities Center on ASU’s Walton Way campus.
ASU, making its third NCAA Tournament appearance in the past six seasons, is headed to Florence, S.C., as the regional’s No. 5 seed and will meet No. 4 Shaw (21-11) in the quarterfinals. Francis Marion will serve as host to the regional in the Smith University Center on the FMU campus.
The Lady Jags and Shaw are certainly no strangers to each other in the postseason. ASU upset Shaw -- the host and top-ranked team -- 81-64 in the first round of the 2004 South Atlantic Regional on the Lady Bears’ home floor at Spaulding Gymnasium in Raleigh, N.C. The Lady Jags advanced out of the regional to the Elite Eight in St. Joseph, Mo.
The rest of the regional will pair top seed Wingate (23-7) against No. 8 Johnson C. Smith (21-9). PBC Tournament champion and second-seeded Lander (22-11) will meet No. 7 Tusculum (26-4), while No. 6 Clayton State (18-10) and No. 6 FMU (21-8) will tangle in the other quarterfinal matchup.
Game times and further details pertaining to the 2008 NCAA South Atlantic Regional will be finalized on Monday, March 10.
