Having recently wrapped up his second season as the head women’s golf coach at Augusta State, Kevin McPherson has worked diligently to return the Lady Jaguars to respectability within the region, with his sights set on ultimately leading the program to national prominence.
In a span of only 17 months under McPherson’s guidance, ASU has registered two victories and 10 top-five finishes in their first 18 events, with two players – Tamara Luccioli and Natalie Wille -- capturing medalist honors.
During the 2009-10 season, McPherson’s squad registered the lowest team round in the nine-year history of the program with a four-under 284 at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate on Feb. 21, 2010.
In just his first year at the helm of the women’s golf program, McPherson led ASU a very solid season. The Lady Jags got off to a hot start, finishing second in their first event of the season before claiming the team title their next time out in Macon, Gal, at the Eat-A-Peach Collegiate. In all, ASU recorded a pair of victories and three other top-five finishes.
He was introduced by Augusta State Director of Golf Josh Gregory and ASU Director of Athletics Clint Bryant on Thursday, July 17, 2008 during a press conference in the J. Fleming Norvell Golf House.
With the appointment, McPherson became the fourth head coach of the Lady Jaguars in the eight-year history of the program.
A native of Conway, S.C., McPherson’s golf pedigree comes honestly. His younger sister – Kristy – is an accomplished LPGA Tour star who was a member of the victorious 2009 Solheim Cup team. She gained fame by participating in Golf Channel’s hit reality series “Big Break VI.”
McPherson spent the previous two seasons as the men’s and women’s assistant golf coach at the University of Central Florida. During his tenure in Orlando, McPherson aided in all aspects of the Golden Knight men’s and women’s programs, including recruiting, academic monitoring, scheduling and individual instruction, as well as the hosting of three intercollegiate tournaments.
Under McPherson, the UCF men’s squad advanced to postseason play in both 2006-07 and 2007-08 while the Golden Knight women’s program earned an NCAA East Regional bid in 2007-08.
Prior to joining the Central Florida staff, McPherson held two other positions within the golf industry. He served as an assistant professional at both the International Club of Myrtle Beach in Murrells Inlet, S.C., and Burning Ridge Golf Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
A 2006 graduate of Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, N.C., McPherson earned a B.A. in Sports Management. During his career at The Abbey, McPherson was a Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference (CVAC) all-conference selection. He served as team captain as a senior and helped lead the Crusaders to consecutive NCAA Atlantic Regional berths.
McPherson began his collegiate career at Brevard Community College in Cocoa, Fla., and led BCC to back-to-back NJCAA National Championship appearances.
