An Augusta native and Augusta State alum, Coble is perhaps the most prolific and highly-decorated women’s amateur golfer in the state of Georgia. An eight-time GSGA (Georgia State Golf Association) Player-of-the-Year, Coble spent three years on the University of Georgia women’s golf team from 1982-84 and earned a B.S. in education from then-Augusta College in 1987. “Anytime you can reach into your own backyard and find someone as capable as Laura Coble, it’s a tremendously positive step forward for the university and for the women’s golf program,” Bryant said. “Laura has proven over the years her commitment and dedication and love for our women’s golf program, and now for her to be able to lead this program as a coach is very exciting to all of us. She has been an integral part of this program since day one, and now she has the opportunity to take charge and shape and mold it how she sees fit.” A four-time Georgia State Amateur champion in 1999, 2003, 2004 and 2005, Coble has twice qualified for the U.S. Amateur and competed in the 2001 U.S. Women’s Open at Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C. An eight-time U.S. Mid-Amateur qualifier, Coble also received an exemption into the LPGA’s 2001 Asahi Ryokuken Championship at Mount Vintage in North Augusta, S.C. Coble, 42, captured the most elusive title of her career in the summer of 2004 when she won the Yamaha Georgia Women’s Open at Summer Grove Golf Club in Newnan. She also earned the 2000 Tommy Barnes Award as the GSGA’s top overall player. Coble’s involvement in golf extends beyond the course as well. She has served as Tournament Chairman of the America’s Choice Mortgage Lady Jaguar Invitational since 2004 and she is a member of the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame’s Executive Committee. Coble is also currently a board member on the Greater Augusta Sports Council. |
