Brester, Abrams win "B" doubles bracket in season opener

SAVANNAH, Ga. – On Friday, Sept. 30, the Augusta State women’s tennis team traveled to Savannah, Ga. for the 2005 ITA Mid-Atlantic Tennis Regional, hosted by Armstrong Atlantic State University.

More than 170 men’s and women’s players representing 20 Division II schools competed in the tournament that marked the season opener for the Lady Jags.

The top performers for ASU were Jeaneen Brester and Ashley Abrams, who teamed up to win the “B” doubles bracket. Brester and Abrams defeated Calhoon/Gettys of FMU 8-3 in round one, Gross/Stewart of CSU 8-5 in the semi-final and Covell/Moyer of FMU 8-5 in the final.

In main draw doubles action, Norma Rovira and Maria Zevallos scored a round one win over Ebel/Smith of Converse (8-2). The team fell in round two to Shchupak/Martin of GCSU 2-8.

Ashley Abrams was the only ASU player to advance to round two in singles competition, but she lost in round two of the main draw consolation bracket to Gabby Acuna of GCSU (4-6, 2-6).

The Lady Jags will be back on the court on Oct. 14-16, when ASU hosts the Newman Collegiate Invitational at the Newman Tennis Center in Augusta, Ga.
