ASU Competes In Alltell Women's Fall Tennis Championship
Jeaneen Brester reaches finals in flight "C" singles consolation action

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Alltel Women’s Fall Tennis Championship was supposed to be a three-day tournament, running from October 7-9, but rain cancelled play on Friday, pushing the opening serve to Saturday morning.

There were eight teams including Augusta State participating in the tournament, including fellow Peach Belt schools Clayton State, UNC Pembroke and host team Georgia College and State University.

In day one action, Ashley Abrams scored a win over Lindsey Teoli of Kennesaw State University, 1-6, 6-0, 6-3, in flight “C” singles competition. Abrams lost in the quarterfinal round to Katie McCabe of the University of Tampa.

Other Jaguars scored wins in consolation matches. Norma Rovira claimed a victory in the “B” singles consolation quarterfinals, defeating Sydney Pallesen of Wingate University 6-3, 6-0. Rovira was knocked out in the semifinal round by Patricia Assumpcao of Mercer University.

Jeaneen Brester picked up two wins in the “C” singles consolation bracket, defeating Shawn Kindley of WU 6-1, 6-0, and Riki Yonack of UT 6-2, 6-4. In the championship match, played at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, Brester lost to Ashley Schumacher of KSU 7-6 in the first set, and then retired in the second set due to injury.

In doubles action, the team of Ashley Abrams and Jeaneen Brester defeated a KSU team in the quarterfinal round of the “B” doubles consolation bracket, but lost in the semifinals to another KSU team.

Next, the Lady Jags will hit the courts on Friday, Oct. 14 for the three-day Newman Collegiate Invitational at the Newman Tennis Center in Augusta, Ga.
