Leonardo Corona, St. Andrew Elevated on the Cross

1590

Church of San Giovanni Eleemosynario, Venice, Italy

At the time when this canvas was painted the Turks had for 130 years governed in Achaia, the district where Andrew was said to have been martyred. It may be presumed that this is the reason for the turbans on the men crucifying the saint. The Golden Legend account says that many of the onlookers who heard Andrew's preaching from the cross protested the crucifixion of the "saintly, gentle man."
