Unlike
prelapsarian images, the painting gives the kneeling Eve a
mess of tangled, ratty hair and an unattractive
expression. Oddly, Adam seems to have escaped the physical
marks of sin. He is still standing and does not even have
a fig leaf. The gesture of his right hand seems to reflect
his words, "The woman whom you put here with me — she gave
me fruit from the tree." Perhaps the artist's intention
was to show Adam as he was before God pronounced his
judgment on him.
