From 1285 to 1296 Guillaume Durand was Bishop of Mende, in the Gévaudan region of southern France (now in Lozère Department).  St. Privatus was the first bishop to serve in Gévaudan, in the 3rd or 4th century.  St. Dominic's presence is explained by the fact that the church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva is operated by the Dominicans.  The star to the left of his right shoulder appears to be intended as his emblem; it is usually on his forehead.

The figuring of the Madonna and Child is an adaptation of the Virgin Hodegetria type, which however does not usually involve a throne.
