Saint Agnes in the Flames

18th century
One of the reliefs carved into the main doors of the Santa Inés Church in the historic center of Mexico City.

Following the version of the Golden Legend used by Caxton, the fire intended to burn Agnes to death is extinguished. The artist has introduced the detail of angels pouring out the water that extinguishes the flames.
