According to the Golden Legend, St. Peter sent St. Apollinaris to preach the gospel in Ravenna, where he had numerous difficulties with the authorities and was finally beaten to death.
Wikipedia's article on the saint reports scholarly opinion that he lived not in the time of Peter but at the end of the second century.
