Saint Augustine of Hippo, Bishop and Doctor, 354 - 430

St. Augustine's writings have been influential throughout the Christian era. His portraits are often hard to identify, because he has few attributes that would distinguish him from other bishops. Despite his prolific writing and active service as Bishop of Hippo, he preferred the contemplative life and so will sometimes be shown with the attributes of a contemplative in the foreground and his episcopal mitre and staff set aside in the background. Narrative images can often be identified with life episodes recounted in the Golden Legend.
