The Assumption and Coronation of the Virgin

1210-1235
Stained Glass
Cathedral of Chartres

The window has four roundels that read from bottom to top: the Dormition (not shown), the carrying of Mary's bier to Gethsemane or Jehoshaphat, the empty tomb, and the Coronation of the Virgin. The Assumption is shown between the third and fourth roundels: two angels lifting Mary to Heaven in a mandorla.

In the center of the empty-tomb scene one of the apostles seems to be swinging a censer, presumably to signify the performance of a liturgical ritual. A censer is sometimes also seen in Dormition icons in the East (example) and from time to time in the West (example).
