Michael Erhart, Altarpiece

1493-94
Wood
Benedictine Abbey Church, Blaubeuren, Germany

St. Benedict is on the far left, with his usual crozier and book. Resting on the book is a wine jar that refers to the episode of the two flagons in the Golden Legend's life of the saint.

On the far right is Benedict's sister, St. Scholastica (dove and book).

Flanking the Virgin are St. John the Baptist (lamb) and St. John the Evangelist (poison cup).
