The Coronation of the Virgin

Circa 1503
Oil on canvas (transferred from panel)
267 x 163 cm
Vatican Museum, Rome

The upper register adopts the most common model for Coronation images, with Christ crowning his mother as they sit side by side flanked by two angels and surrounded by many more.

Details in the lower register closely follow the paragraph in which the Golden Legend recounts the apostles' discovery of the empty tomb: the text's "marvelous odor" is expressed through the flowers, the "voice of angels" through the musical instruments above, and the "cloud much bright" serves as a dividing line between the two registers.
