The Dormition of the Virgin

Bohemian, mid-14th century
Unidentified artist
Tempera on panel
Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, U.S.A.

The beardless youth at right is St. John the Evangelist, the graying man just above Mary's halo is St. Peter. The book in his right hand and the censer on the edge of the bed are details seen in some eastern Dormitions. The painting's style follows that of Venetian adaptations of eastern icons.

The Museum suggests that the small figures at the bottom of the painting are probably the persons who commissioned the painting.

For a brief discussion of this painting and another Dormition of this type, see Boehm and Fajt, Prague: The Crown of Bohemia, 1347-1437 (Yale U.P., 2005), pp. 154-6.
