Saint Caprais, Bishop and Martyr - died 303 St. Caprais or Caprasius was bishop of Agen, France, during the persecution of Diocletian. His legend has it that during the persecution he went into hiding on a nearby mountain, but when he watched from the mountain the martyrdom of the young girl St. Faith and observed her steadfastness he went to the prefect Dacien, confessed himself a Christian, and was put to death. The 19th century painting at left shows him with his episcopal garb and crozier, along what are presumably the instruments by which he was executed. Feast day: October 20 The painting at left by Jean-Baptiste Delmas is in the Musée Fau, Conques, France. Menu |
