St.
Centola,
Virgin and Martyr - Died 304
The
cult
of St. Centola is mostly confined to the region around
Burgos. She is said to have been martyred in Burgos in 304
during the persecution of Diocletian along with a
companion named Elena. In Vadelateja, in
the Cañon del Ebro region, there are also
the ruins of a late Visigothic hermitage dedicated to St.
Centola and St. Elena. The altarpiece of the church in
Villafranca (by Rodrigo de la Haya, who also did the main
altarpiece in the Burgos cathedral) includes a portrait of
the saint.
Feast day:
August 13 (observed only in Burgos Cathedral)
