The Circumcision of Jesus Luke 2:21 notes that the Christ Child was circumcised on his eighth day, as is required by Mosaic law. There follows Luke's much more circumstantial account of the Presentation in the Temple, which has always overshadowed the Circumcision as an event pictured in art and celebrated with considerable enthusiasm even to this day. (One 16th-century image seems to conflate the two). Feast day: January 1 At left, segment from a carved altarpiece. Other images: Menu |
