The
Conques Last Judgment Tympanum
Detail:
The last four saints in the procession
Bearing haloes, these four figures might represent specific persons,
but
if so it is not clear who. The second saint from the left is a
female martyr (with a palm branch in her right hand, her left held
palm-out in a gesture of acceptance of the divine will). The saint on
the far left echoes this palm-out gesture, but his or her posture
suggests the balance of "indecision and decision" before the moment of
conversion.
The sleeved garment on the saint on the right may be a dalmatic,
the vestment of a deacon. One book has suggested St. Vincent.
The bearded saint has layman's clothing and a staff -- a pilgrim saint?
