The Conques Last Judgment Tympanum
Detail: Christ in the
central mandorla
Over
his tunic Christ wears a pallium.
At the his feet two angels
with candles stand guard in what might be a stylized sea. (In Revelation 4:6 there
is a "sea of glass" before the throne.) Above Christ's right hand an
angel holds a scroll with some of
the words from Matthew 25:34, Venite benedicti Patris
mei possidete paratum vobis regnum -- "Come ye blessed of my
Father, possess the kingdom prepared for you." The corresponding
scroll held by the angel on his left reads DISCEDITE A ME followed by a
few blurred letters which must have been the beginning of the words
MALEDICTI IN IGNEM ETERNUM, the words that follow in Matthew 25:41:
"Depart from me ye damned, into eternal fire."
