Saints Cosmas and Damian, Martyrs - Died 287 (?)

According to the legend St. Cosmas and St. Damian were twin physicians in Syria who did not accept fees. To make them and their brothers sacrifice to idols, a Roman official had them tortured, crucified, and stoned -- but to no avail. He then ordered them beheaded.

The saints are usually shown in similar or identical garments and often wear hats like those seen at left. Sometimes medical instruments appear as their attributes.
