The
Coronation of the Virgin MaryThis is an unusual
pairing of the theme of Mary's coronation with the device, briefly
popular in Spain and its possessions, of representing the Trinity as
three male figures with the same appearance. If the middle male figure
is the Father, as one might assume from his prominence, this would also
be a rare example of the crown being placed by him rather than by the
Son.
The Santa Barbara
mission also owns another painting of this type, in which the central
person of the Trinity is just about to place the crown.
