Pope Saint Marcellus, Martyr - died 309

St. Marcellus served during the turbulent period following the persecution of Diocletian. He was exiled by the Emperor Maxentius and died far from Rome. The very brief notice of him in the Golden Legend says Maxentius (whom it calls Maximian) seized a house church, converted it into a stable, and forced the Pope to work in it as a stable hand.

Feast day: January 16

At left, a statue in the church of one of the many French villages named after "St. Marcel."  This one is in Aveyron.
