Ecce Homo
South German, first
half of 17th century
Silver, rosewood, ebony; silver-gilt details on the frame
Metropolitan
Museum of Art, New York
Putti on the frame carry the instruments of the Passion: the cross, the
ladder, the column, and one other on the lower left. The composition is
a cross between the full-scale narrative Ecce Homo type and the kind
that presents Christ alone. Here we see only Christ and the High Pries,
accompanied by just two attendants.
The attendant on our left has distinctly African features and carries a
half-moon symbol on his staff.
