The Lamentation

The figure at Jesus' feet is St. Mary Magdalene, identifiable by the flowing blond hair. Mary is of course the woman holding his head. And the beardless young man with his arms outstretched is St. John the Evangelist.

Directly to the left of this image is a decorative border with Jonah being swallowed by the great fish.  Typologically, Jonah's three days in the fish refer to Christ's in the tomb.
