As in most Birth of Mary images, Giotto echoes early images of the birth of Jesus (the reclining mother, the midwives, the basin) but differentiates the two Nativities by putting this scene into what is  not a stable or cave but emphatically a house, with walls, windows, and numerous architectural details.
