El Corazón de María

Church of San Juan Teitipac, Oaxaca, Mexico
Blessed Virgin with Heart (White bridal gown with heart on chest).
Wood, gesso, paint; fabric clothing; glass eyes, lashes, wig; life size.

The figure is dressed as a bride, with a bridal bouquet made of seed pearls and costume jewelry. Pinned to her chest is a red metal heart with a silver sunburst.  Attached to her wrists are metal strips which seem to represent streaming light. The palm-out position of the hands and the awkward bend of the arms suggest the limbs are moveable.  The name Corazón de María was supplied by our informant at Teitipac, Sr. Hilario Lopez.
