La Santa Magdalena
Church of the Virgen de
la Navidad, Teotitlan
del
Valle, Oaxaca, Mexico
St. Mary Magdalene
(Long,
golden hair, halo, upcast eyes, hands crossed at wrists over chest;
purple
robe, gold cape).
Wood, gesso, paint; glass eyes, wig, sculpted teeth; life size.
This santo is part
of a Crucifixion group for display during Holy
Week. Thus there is no ointment jar, but the saint can be
identified by the long, loose blond hair. The face and hands
lack detailing
and have a rubbery look. There has been some discoloration to the
fingers
and the back of the left hand, and the right pinkie is broken. This may
be a frame-type statue.
