Saint Salome St. Salome was the mother of James the Greater and John the Evangelist, the "sons of Zebedee." She was among the women who stayed by while Jesus was on the cross, according to Matthew 27:55-56 (cached) and Mark 15:40-41 (cached); and in Mark 16:1 (cached) she is among the women who discover the empty tomb. Most important, St. Salome's request that her sons be favored in Heaven was one of Jesus' most striking "teachable moments" (Matthew 20:20-28, cached). The Golden Legend claims that St. Salome's full name was Mary Salome and that she was a half-sister of the Virgin Mary.
