St. Chrysogonus Before the Emperor Diocletian

Church of San Crisogono in Trastevere, Rome

As is common, St. Chrysogonus is depicted as a young military officer.

This is one of three reliefs on the life of the saint in the apse of the church.  I have been unable to ascertain the date of these works, but the heroic style and accurate antique garb suggest that it may date from the 17th-century restoration of the church that Giovanni Battista Soria undertook for Scipione Borghese.
