Episode from the Life of St. Chrysogonus

Church of San Crisogono in Trastevere, Rome

The woman in the group on the left may be St. Anastasia, who the Golden Legend received comforting letters from Saint Chrysogonus during her travails.

This is one of three reliefs on the life of the saint in the apse of the church.  I have been unable to ascertain the date of these works, but the heroic style and accurate antique garb suggest that it may date from the 17th-century restoration of the church that Giovanni Battista Soria undertook for Scipione Borghese.
