The Annunciation
1750
low
relief
north transept,
Church of Sant'Ignazio, Rome
This unusual
Annunciation dispenses with the objects usually placed to characterize
the Virgin (book, vase of lilies, prie-dieu) and focuses her attention
and ours on a basket of bread, symbolizing the body of Christ "which is
given for you" in the sacrament of the Eucharist (Luke 22:19).
