Paris Nogari (1536-1601)A label at the
church identifies this as a "Circoncisione" ("Circumcision"), but it
seems to conflate details from the Circumcision
and the Presentation in the Temple.
The candles and the doves are from the iconography of the Presentation,
but images of that episode conventionally include the prophet Simeon
and usually the widow Anna as well. The man standing across from Mary
cannot be Simeon, because the latter was not any kind of priest. On the
other hand, the mitre on his head is like those on the priest's head in
other 16th-century Circumcision images.
