St. Mary Magdalene in Contemplation

Circa 1624?
Oil on canvas
Cathedral of St. Mary, Pamplona, Spain

The painting is in an altarpiece that is dated 1624 by the cathedral's guidebook. Here the saint is shown with all the attributes conventional for contemplatives: a skull, a cross, a flail, and a book. Above and behind the book we see the ointment jar that is her attribute in portraits. The hair is long and flowing, as in most images of Mary Magdalene, although here it is darker than one often sees. The décolletage is also typical of later images of this quondam sinner.
