Cristo de la Paciencia

17th century
Oil on canvas
Refectory Museum, Cathedral of St. Mary, Pamplona, Spain (Provenance: the small town of Sartaguda, Navarre)

The figure here resembles the similarly named San Paciencia santo in Teitipac, Mexico. In both, an exhausted Christ sits with a rope yoke around his neck. But unlike the Mexican exemplar, this Christ has a crown of thorns and wears less clothing.

On the right we see the kneeling donor, behind her an outdoor scene. The cross, with its INRI label, is at Jesus' feet. At the lower left is a basket containing rope and two of the familiar instruments in the Arma Christi, a hammer and tongs. Behind the basket is a red garment -- probably the purple cloak the soldiers used to mock him, or possibly the seamless garment for which lots were cast after he died.
