Nosa Señora do Socorro

18th century
Wood, polychrome
Museum of the Church of San Paio (St. Pelagius), Santiago de Compostela, Spain

This santo differs considerably from other "Socorro" images. (The title means "Our Lady of Help.") In southern Spain Nuestra Señora del Socorro is a dressed santo with realistic tears on her face (see examples from Jerez and Antequera). Our Lady of Perpetual Help -- in Spanish La Virgen del Perpetuo Socorro --  is an icon rather than a santo, well known throughout the Catholic world.
