La Virgen del Pilar

The story of the Virgen del Pilar goes back at least as far as 13th-century documents now in the cathedral at Zaragossa. It tells of a visit to Spain by the Virgin Mary in 40 AD, in which she charged St. James the Greater with establishing a church in her honor and gave him a statue of herself with the Christ Child, which was to be placed on a pillar in the new church.
