This sculpture appears above
the entrance to Santa Maria della Scala, Trastevere, Rome. Note
the stairs ("scala") in the lower left of the composition.
Actually the church gets the "scala" name because of a miraculous
picture of the Madonna and Child that had been displayed on a stairway
nearby until the church was built for it. The picture is inside
the church.
