The Baptism and Ordination of St. Timothy
Ca. 1080
Fresco
Marian
Oratory in the Church of Santa Pudenziana, Rome
The damaged image on the left is of the ordination of St. Timothy, with
St. Paul in the center (with the halo).
The image on the left shows St. Paul baptizing St. Timothy and St.
Novatus (said by Roman tradition to be his brother). The two are incongruously
placed in the kind of small baptismal font that came into use after
adult baptisms became less frequent. Presumably the other
prominent figures in the baptism image are St. Pudens (supposedly the
father of the two men) and SS. Praxedes and Pudenziana (their sisters).
