Francisco de Herrera the Elder
St. Catherine Appearing to the Prisoners
1629
Oil on canvas
Bob Jones University,
Greenville, South Carolina
The painting's title was provided by the authoritative Web Gallery of
Art, but there is no account in the Golden
Legend of any apparition by Catherine to prisoners. Most likely
what is shown here is the episode
in
which the imprisoned Catherine is visited by the Emperor's wife, her
"prince of knights" named Porphyry, and 200 other knights. Her
preaching is said to have converted them all.
Herrera was a member
of the school of Seville.
