Jacques Daret
The Presentation of Christ in the Temple
c. 1434
Panel
Petit Palais, Paris
The Web Gallery
of Art identifies this as the Circumcision, but note the doves and
candles. Also, the hands of the man at the table are covered, as Simeon's always
are.
The slender objects in the hands of the four attending women are
candles.
One would expect to see Joseph, but the hooded man on the left holds
the tau-topped walking stick of St.
Anthony Abbot.
The painting is one
of the panels of the Saint-Vaast church in Arras.
