Jacopo Pontormo
Supper at Emmaus

1525
Oil on canvas, 230 x 173 cm.
Uffizi Gallery, Florence, Italy

Despite the naturalistic approach, the artist emphasizes the Eucharistic implications of the supper by having Christ bless the bread in the manner of a priest at Mass, attended by the religious "servers" behind him.  He also refrains from including anything in the meal other than bread and wine, the elements used in the Eucharist.

The Web Gallery of Art reports that the incongruous "eye of God" is a later addition.
