The artist provides a quite literal image of Ambrose's vision as described in the Golden Legend. The one oddment is the figure of St. Peter: he is balding from the forehead, like St. Paul (Peter's head is usually balding from the back); and his beard is longer and less squared than usual for St. Peter.
