Gian Lorenzo Bernini
Saint Longinus
1631-38
Marble, height 450 cm
San Pietro, Rome
"This is the first in
the series of representation of ecstatic saints by Bernini. The
sculpture
is part of the decoration at the crossing of naves in the San Pietro,
designed
completely by Bernini. Some of the sculptures were executed by other
artists
after Bernini's design. Due to its immense size, Saint Longinus was
made
from four pieces of marble."
