The master of Hoogstraeten was active from about 1490 to 1530. Some art historians have attributed this painting to Hugo van der Goes, on the basis of the pointed, fluttering angels; the smooth, compact face of the Virgin; the fascinating landscape conceived as a theatrical wing; and the pose of the Madonna.
